Florida Shores

Florida Shores - 5x7 - Oil on Linen
I've been practicing waves lately, it's been a nice challenge. Some of my favorite shots to practice from are the photos I took from Palm Beach and Tequesta, Florida, while I was visiting for their plein air festival last February. Lots of great memories!

McNary Sunrise I

McNary Sunrise I - Oil on Linen - 5x7

There's something magical about the sun rising over a marsh land. I was really captivated a while back while driving through the McNary Wildlife Refuge early in the morning and had to pull over to take some pictures!

This little plein air piece is the companion of yesterdays, I did them both on the same afternoon from a slightly different spot!

McNary Marshland

McNary Marshland - 6x8 - Oil on Panel
Lots and lots of grey here in the Columbia Basin recently, but thankfully the wetland areas have some color!

Old Oregon Trail I

Old Oregon Trail I - 6x8 - Oil on Canvas Panel
This scene is from a farm area somewhere between Baker City and Ontario, Oregon. My husband and I drove by last winter and there was just something about the red willows against the fog that made the drive beautiful. Some people consider grey days dreary, but I prefer to think of them as serene. Unless it's really cold, then I'll start thinking about running away to Arizona!

Sauvie Island Inlet

Sauvie Island Inlet - Oil on Linen Panel - 6x8

I was in Portland for the weekend, so I decided I should see for myself what all the hubbub was about concerning this Sauvie Island I keep hearing about! It's definitely a gorgeous area, I wish I could have spent more time exploring!

Dusk in the Delta, Day 11 - 30 in 30

I was lucky enough to get out and do some plein air work today! I even felt adventurous enough to do them closer to sunset than I normally work. Usually this time of day is an exercise in frustration, because the light is only consistent for about 15 minutes, so I put down the very basic color notes and composition, and filled out the details back at home.

I stayed in the jeep while working on this, because the wind was at a sustained 35mph, with gusts of 50!

Fork in the Bow

Fork in the Bow - 6x8 - Oil on Linen Panel
Click Here to BidI'm not really sure why the title entertains me as much as it does. This is a fork in the Bow River of Canada, I guess having two tool names is amusing? Or maybe because the two words, bow and fork, indicate very different paths for a river? It makes me happy to say out loud, and that's all the justification I need!

Of course, I do need to be careful with things that entertain me without my being able to put a finger on why. My somewhat sheltered upbringing lends itself to unintentional innuendo. =)

Summers Veil - Plein Air

Summers Veil - 6x6 - Oil on Panel

It's that time of year again, distant wildfires are sending their smoke up our way to create a really interesting haze toward the end of the day. Aside from the adrenaline and hazard pay I think the thing I miss most about fighting wildfires is the astounding sunsets they always bring. The best I can do now is enjoy the unique lighting and the memories the smell brings back!

This was painted en plein air along the Columbia River, looking to the west to Rattlesnake Mountain.

Winter's Colors

Winter's Colors - 6x6 -  Oil on panel

Sold

Recently I've begun painting on a orange-red underpainting, and this painting really demonstrates why I like it. It's not so much the pops of orange that occur through the painting, but the way it shines through thin layers of paint, as in the sky here. It really helped me capture that wispy pink look the sky takes on just before the real sunset begins!

I've finished this 11x14 studio piece titled "The Long Winter", you can see the information here.

Summer Marsh - McNary National Wildlife Refuge Plein Air painting

Summer Marsh - Oil on Panel - 6x6

Sold

Ah, these cold days have me remembering back to when I could paint on location without gloves and a hat! This little plein air piece was painted at the McNary National Wildlife Refuge: a beautiful little marshland outside of the Tri-Cities.

Recently I was hiking around and painting at Dry Falls here in Washington. It's a really beautiful area! I blogged about it here, and here's the finished painting:

Tidal Stream - Puget Sound Landscape painting

This is another Google Maps Street View Tour painting, Pacific Northwest edition. This little tidal canal was on the east side of the Olympic Peninsula. I've never been to the area before, so it was great to be able to "drive" around.

My posting may be a bit spotty, I have a painting that's a little bigger than I'm used to that I'm focusing on completing. I don't want to say what it is, but I'm REALLY excited about it! My small works will probably be 3-4 per week for a while. I'd rather paint fewer small ones than release ones I'm not satisfied with.
